In this assignment, Mr. Wierdsma was initially charged with creating a technical feasibility document. He then participated in product evaluations for a data cleansing tool while turning business requirements into technical specifications. He created necessary data mapping documentation. He assisted the data architect in making modifications to the existing data model. Mr. Wierdsma was responsible for ensuring the source extracts satisfied the specifications. He then created the code that loaded and transformed the resulting data into the appropriate tables in the data warehouse. Created and modified scripts to run load programs. He performed unit and system integration testing. Made performance tuning modifications as required.

This assignment saw Mr. Wierdsma’s return to RBC Insurance as an ETL developer on the LifeMAP application. He responded to problem logs identified by the user acceptance testing team. Finally,Mr. Wierdsma participated in the production roll out of the application.

LifeMAP Project June 1999 to June 2000
Mr. Wierdsma was part of the team that built a data warehouse for Westbury Canadian Life, now part of RBC Insurance. The team followed the methodologies presented by Ralph Kimball in his two works that, for many, define the field as it is today, "The Data Warehouse Toolkit" and "The Data Warehouse Lifecycle Toolkit". Mr. Wierdsma’s main role was that of ETL specialist, designing the architecture for data extraction and loading and writing the technical load specifications. He participated in the creation of the data model and wrote the code to extract and load data into the data warehouse. He also created some of the OLAP reporting required by the client.

Mr. Wierdsma fulfilled a number of roles as a full time employee, including programmer analyst, architect, team lead, etc. By 1994, he held the title Applications Assistant Manager. He gained experience in a broad range of technologies from a 3090 IBM mainframe environment to PC based DOS programming and finally Windows-Netware based client server development. Mr. Wierdsma used such tools as PL1, VSAM, CICS, DB2, JCL, Clipper, SQLWindows and SQLBase. He also learned data modeling using System Architect, project scheduling using Microsoft Project, joint application design (JAD) and was trained in a number of project management methodologies.
